First Cargo arrives in Pakistan from China under a new road trade deal.

The first shipment of merchandise from China entered Pakistan on Sunday thanks to a new road trade deal between the two close neighbors, a development that local traders are applauding as positive for the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

This achievement comes after a recent international road transport (TIR) route was established between the Chinese city of Kashgar and Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, with the intention of fostering cross-border trade.

The fact that this is the first TIR commercial route between China and Pakistan highlights a novel method of cross-border travel for Xinjiang and may serve as a model for more trade routes along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

As part of the TIR agreement, two shipments with a destination of Afghanistan have arrived at the Sost Dry Port. On Monday, these items will be cleared for delivery to Afghanistan.

As part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China, a longtime ally, has invested over $65 billion in CPEC infrastructure projects in Pakistan. The corridor includes a system of roads and other infrastructure that links China with the Arabian Sea and supports Pakistan’s economic development.
